Carbon Leaf Countdown #50: Come Again?
Jan 17
Starting our countdown off right is a hidden gem from Carbon Leaf’s second studio album titled Shadows At The Banquet Hall. At number 50, it’s “Come Again?”
Now this is an interesting pick to start our countdown off. In terms of quality Carbon Leaf songs, this one has to be up there. In fact, it was actually high up on my personal ballot for this list. But as far as Carbon Leaf songs go, I doubt I’d share this song to those looking to get into the band. Similar to how you don’t show-off Last Kiss to get people interested in Pearl Jam, this song is not an accurate depiction of who the band is. It’s a straight-forward alt-rock song pretty much. There’s no blurring of genre lines, no mandolins, Barry basically screaming over the chorus, no complex & introspective guitar solo, et cetera. Shadows At The Banquet Hall has plenty of songs in the same vein like Flood, but I think “Come Again?” is really Carbon Leaf’s definitive 90s alt-rock song. It’s a song that could be sandwiched between Live & Bush on the radio and no one would think twice about it. Because of that, it might just end up being the black sheep of this countdown. You know what though? There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. It’s different than what you’re used to and would even stand out at most of their concerts, but it really is just a damn fine song. As it stands, the song leaves you wanting more in that vein from the quintet, but in the end, Barry screaming over just one song in the catalogue really makes it special. Makes it stand out. Carbon Leaf’s no Nickelback. They don’t need to make the same archetypal alt-rock song over and over again. They went for it once and nailed it. That’s enough for this fan…

I’m not surprised that ‘Come Again?’ made the list. It’s one of several songs I have always thought would be worthy of the band ‘revisiting’ or reimagining. The angst ridden screams of a ‘much younger than he is now Barry Privett’ turned me off of this song when I first heard it (discovered the band around 2008) but it most certainly does grow on you and is entirely appropriate to the era in which is was originally recorded.

I’ve told Barry many times that this is my fav song. He laughs at me every time. I swear though, if I ever win the lottery, I will pay them enough money that even Barry will do this song for me.

Definitely a look down a road not taken.
