Carbon Leaf Countdown #40: This Is My Song

Indian Summer is home to a lot of great songs. It’s a vastly different record than Echo Echo, but the two are easily Carbon Leaf’s most debated albums in the G.O.A.T argument. Just look over to the right for the poll on the best Carbon Leaf albums. 9 options to choose and the two above take almost 60% of the vote. I’m an Echo Echo guy, but man, if some of the songs on Indian Summer aren’t just as good if not better. “This Is My Song” is clearly no exception here and I’m a little surprised it clocked in so low.

I’m probably going to end up saying this a lot about Carbon Leaf songs (and I think I already have), but “This Is My Song” is just fun. Fun! Strong melody, great lyrics, fast tempo, upbeat feeling. There’s nothing to dislike about the song here and whenever it’s played at concerts, there’s always a wave of people bobbing up and down with near-Cheshire smiles on their faces. Give it a listen and you’ll see where the joy comes from. Lyically, there are so many lines featured that people just love to sing or shout. “My name is luck! This is my song!” or “My name is hope! Luck just ran out!” Listen to it twice in a row and try not to shout it even if it’s in your head. Other than that, there are very few songs that make guitar distortions sound pretty and this is one of them. I know that’s basically an oxymoron, but as Barry croons and the rhythm tigthens up around thirty seconds into the song, the rhythmic distortion just comes off very beautifully to me. I know I’m weird, but I get a huge kick out of it. Enough typing. Just listen to the song. You’ll love it.

and P.S. – I have never been fortunate to hear this live, but all it takes is the distinctive intro to get my head bopping, no matter if I am in my car or in my room.
