Carbon Leaf Countdown #49: Wolftrap And Fireflies
Jan 17
Also coming from Carbon Leaf’s second album, number 49 on our list is “Wolftrap And Fireflies.”
Now this is more like it. This is Carbon Leaf. “Come Again?” is a great song, but this a true-to-the-heart Carbon Leaf song. It kicks of their second album & sets the stage perfectly for the very underrated Shadows In The Banquet Hall. Meander is a pretty good album as well, but it was this album that really solidified the Carbon Leaf sound so to say. “Wolftrap And Fireflies” is a key opener that showcases a lot of what is and would continue to be great about Carbon Leaf. You’ve got a folksy guitar melody to set the pace of the song. Remember this fans because there are a lot more of these melodies to discover & enjoy on our list. Barry’s vocal pattern rolls on and on showcasing that he could probably kill it as a rapper if he wanted to be. I know some of you are laughing too, but the vocal patterns he creates sometimes are really just that good. To be honest, this was evident in “Come Again?,” but it really gets showcased here. During the chorus, you get a subtle taste of their vocal harmonies which a lot of times turns out to be a highlight of their songs. The breakdown during the bridge and the outro showcase their jam-band influence, their musicianship, and their creativity in the studio with other instruments….or different effects. I can’t really tell here to be honest what instrument or what effect that exactly is. Eh, who cares? It’s still awesome. I’m sure the song has to be in some part about the Wolf Trap Performing Arts Foundation in Vienna, VA, a venue Carbon Leaf has played countless times over the years. As Barry says in the song though, “Wolftrap and fireflies/what does it mean?” So yeah, do you need to care about what the song is then? No, but you can care that this is Carbon Leaf and in 1997, would set the stage for the band to continue to expand upon some fourteen-odd years later.

This is one of several songs that didn’t really catch my attention until I heard it live. Now it’s one of the songs I pull up frequently on the iPod and look forward to hearing when attending a winter show (or at the Wolftrap itself).
