Carbon Leaf Countdown #11: 7 Brides For 7 Sinners
Feb 13
Well what do we need? Father, Son, and holy smokes? Well just get them to the church on time. At #11, it’s “7 Brides For 7 Sinners!”
Let me start of by saying that I included the information for 5 Alive! down below because that’s the early CD version I know of, but the video is off their newest live album. I just find that version to be a wee-bit better and more suitable for explaining the song since it’s not on any studio albums. Yes, #11 on our Carbon Leaf countdown is a song that has never been released on a regular album and no studio version exists of it that I know. Carbon Leaf is a live band. The sooner we get the in our heads, the better we will be. Some songs may sound better in the studio, but what is that? Like 5 including songs like “Maybe Today?” Yeah, Carbon Leaf is a live band. If you haven’t seen them, I’m not going to say you aren’t a Carbon Leaf fan because that’s not fair, but you really don’t know them until you see them live.
The song is a bundle of fun wrapped up in a live performance that’s been hand-crafted especially for us for over a decade. The song is pretty straight-forward in terms of story and really hits that Americana style on the dot as far as execution. Everyone’s part plays out masterfully including the bass breakdown after the bridge. Jon Markel crushes it in the video below and I absolutely love watching him do it live with his fingers going nuts. The harmonies are off-the-charts here and really make the song (like the guitar finger spasms wouldn’t by themselves). The best part though? I absolutely love the harmonies as the end the song. I really wish they would incorporate some of those harmonies a bit more in their work like they do on their version of “Gloryland.” It ends a great song here on a perfect note. We don’t need a studio version of this song anyway. Everyone knows it by heart by this point and we now have two live albums with it so we enjoy it from two perspectives.

In fairness CL has had occasional rough patches in the ‘live’ department. When I first caught them live Jason and John were very new at their respective roles and struggling a bit. (A heap of complex material put them on a steap learning curve.) That is all behind them now so if you perhaps did catch them a few years ago and are thinking “?”. Check them out again.
