Carbon Leaf Countdown #16: Changeless
Feb 12
One of Carbon Leaf’s most simple songs and definitely one of the most poignant comes up next. At #16, it’s “Changeless!”
I know there’s an intriciate mandolin (right?) part in here, but overall, the song is so simple. The lyrics are minimal, the bass melody is simple, the drum beat just keeps it chugging along. Carbon Leaf gets it though: less is more. With a song like this, do you need a cool drum part? Do you need a face-melting guitar solo? Do you need new words for the chorus each time they come along? The song keeps it very simple and really lets the lyrics, minimal as they are, take control and really play with your mind a bit.
Don’t get me wrong though; the music is definitely there and supports the song very well. But it’s the story here that drives the song and really makes you rememeber it. The vague nature of those lyrics really keep it open for anything too. It could be love (“what are the odds this ends”) or just pure friendship (“To share some laughs and last goodbyes”). How open it is really makes it sit with people too. We all have those who we miss, love lost or friends gone. With so many friends in the military and another one on the way overseas again, the lyrics resonate strongly with me here. In fact, reading over them, it feels like we should have been playing a game of cards listening to this song with some beer (not wine darn it) on his list. But then I remember we did stupid stuff in a public place and we’ve got pictures. “My photographs of these years will make me laugh through the tears.” Well put.
