Carbon Leaf Countdown #10: Indecision

What should become the unofficial state song of Virginia clocks in next to kick off our top ten! At #10, it’s “Indecision!”

Like “Shine” kicked off the top 25 well, I don’t think there’s a better song to kick off the top ten here. It’s definitely a top ten song for Carbon Leaf too, despite it being a newer addition to their catalogue. I’ll come out and say it is one of my personal favorites. For a good stretch there (maybe a year and a half), it seemed Carbon Leaf opened every show I went to in or around Richmond, VA with this song. It was awesome. It never got old and that’s saying something. I went to a lot in that time period. Really a lot. Like 3 times in 5 days a lot at one point. And they opened probably all of them except one or two with “Indecision.” You just knew you were in a for a show when that opening guitar riff kicked in.

Just hearing that opening guitar riff with headphones on now takes me back to each and every concert experience during that time frame. I can see Terry’s hair flying wildly as he strums his guitar. Jon does a half hop while jutting back and forth on the bass. Jason kicks in with the drum with his trademark cap. Carter is looking down at his guitar preparing to wail. Then I can see Barry so clearly leering over the stage, tipping the mike almost so it falls over, proudly proclaiming, “Long days!” Each and every time it happened, I knew I was in for another great show. Don’t get me wrong too – it’s not just a good live song. The studio version is an excellent track and kicks off their 2009 album hard instantly letting you know this is going to be another great album. But the live connection I have with this song is staggering and I look forward to each and every show, even if it’s not opening the show. Trust me though – at least in Virginia, it’s the perfect opener for a killer live show.

Okay, now I’m jealous! I know I’d be at as many shows as my wallet would allow if I lived near them! I used to live in Virginia Beach, but I left when they were just bairns!

Excellent song – one of the reasons I can’t decide if “Nothing Rhymes with Woman,” “Echo Echo,” “Indian Summer,” or “Ether-Electrified Porch Music” is my favorite CL album. No, haven’t voted on best album yet. Can you vote more than once?
